Generally, the cost of this treatment depends on how the chemotherapy is given. The chemotherapy cost in India ranges from ₹56,000 ($800) to ₹2,80,000 ($4,000) per session.

Chemotherapy in India can be given orally, intravenously (IV) or through port. The chemotherapy cost in India highly depends on the way the chemotherapy is delivered to you. If delivered through the port the cost is the highest followed by IV and then oral.

Chemotherapy given by port requires a minor surgery due to which the charges for it is higher whereas tablets and capsules have to be consumed orally making oral chemotherapy the least expensive of all types of chemotherapy.

But wait there’s more,

Below, find a detailed discussion of chemotherapy cost.

The affordable cost of chemotherapy in India is a major factor that prompts people to choose India for their treatment.

Here is the cost estimate based on how chemotherapy is given :

Type Price Range

Through IV ₹70,000 ($1,000) – ₹1,05,000 ($1,500)
Through port ₹2,10,000 ($3,000) – ₹2,80,000 ($4,000)

How you will be receiving chemotherapy will be decided by your doctor based on the type, stage of the cancer and the health of the patient.

Factors affecting chemotherapy cost in India :

The chemotherapy cost can be different for different patients depending on the following factors :

Factors affecting chemotherapy

  • Type of the cancer
The cost of chemotherapy is different for different types of cancer. Depending on the type of cancer a person has, the chemotherapy cost will be decided.
  • Stage of the cancer
This plays a big role in deciding the chemotherapy cost. If the cancer is discovered in the initial stage (stage I and stage II), then the cost of chemotherapy is relatively low.
If the cancer is discovered in advanced stage (stage III and stage IV), then the cost is relatively high.
This is so because cancer discovered at initial stage will have less cycles of chemotherapy and cancer discovered at the advanced stage will have more number of cycles of chemotherapy.
  • Treatment plan
Sometimes, chemotherapy is given in combination with other treatments like surgery or radiation. So, the cost will vary for different patient depending on the treatment plan.
In some cases, doctors and patients can choose the treatment regimen and in other cases, there is a standard treatment to be followed. Also, the length of the treatment affects the cost of treatment.
  • Place of the treatment
The chemotherapy cost in India also depends on the place of the treatment. Generally, the areas where cost of living is high, the treatment cost is also high.
  • Treatment Setting
The cost also depends on whether the treatment is given at home, clinic or hospital.
Further, the way the chemotherapy is administered affects its pricing as chemo by port is way too expensive than IV and oral chemotherapy.
But the decision of administrating chemotherapy is only taken by the oncologist depending on your cancer.
  • Chemotherapy dosage
The chemotherapy dosage is different for different person. Normally, the dosage is high for heavy weight person and low for light weight person. Some drugs consider both height and weight.

What is Chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy is one of the treatments available for curing cancer apart from surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, immunotherapy etc.

Chemotherapy is basically a systematic treatment in which chemical drugs are used to kill the cancer cells. People presume that chemotherapy is used only to treat cancer, but it is used in treating various other types of diseases as well apart from cancer.

Initially, people used to dread chemotherapy because of its side effects, however, with medical advancements, awareness and its successful use in treating cancer have made chemotherapy more acceptable to the people.

There is an array of options available when Cancer Treatment in India is concerned. Cancer can be well cured if it is diagnosed as soon as possible and the treatments are immediately given, so apart from cost, time is also a key to taking the decision.

How does chemotherapy treatment work?

Basically, Chemotherapy restricts the cancer cells from splitting. It destroys the cancer cells more quickly than it destroys most healthy cells. Since chemotherapy drugs are powerful, they cause damage to many growing cells, including some healthy cells.

What is the duration of chemotherapy?

Nowadays for the best outcome, the patient will require standard, or in other words, uninterrupted chemotherapy over an accomplished period. Just to define when the session for the treatment will happen and to what extent, a convention plan is drawn up.

A course of chemotherapy might be only a one-day treatment, or can keep going on for fourteen days - it will rely on the type and stage of cancer.

If the patient requires more than one course of treatment there will be a rest period for his/her body to recover. Firstly, the treatment will go for one day, after one-day treatment, the patient will take seven days of rest, again after seven days next treatment will start and the patient will take three-week rest and so forth.

Hello Faiyaz, By moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma, it means that it is an intermediate grade cancer. Adenocarcinoma can develop in different places like lung, prostate, pancreas, esophagus, and colon. Due to the absence of the place of cancer, we have given you a list of general treatments which are as follows: Stage I: If she is healthy enough then surgery is the only treatment required. Chemotherapy may be given after the surgery to reduce the risk of cancer coming back. A second surgery might be done too if some cancer is left behind. If there are serious health issues, then your mother may be given radiation therapy as the first treatment. Stage II: Surgery is usually the first preference for this stage. In some cases, chemotherapy along with radiation may be given before the surgery to shrink the size of the tumor. If there is cancer left behind, a second surgery may be done. This may be followed by chemo or radiation or both. Stage III: Some combination of radiation therapy, surgery and chemotherapy may be given. The treatment option is generally decided by the size and place of the tumor. Generally, the treatment starts with chemotherapy, often combined with radiotherapy. Surgery may be given if the doctors feel that any remaining cancer can be removed. Stage IV: In stage IV, cancer has spread widely. If the health is good, treatments like surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy may be given. Some of the best hospitals in Mumbai and Delhi are: 1) Tata memorial hospital, Mumbai (Government hospital) 2) Fortis hospital, Mumbai (Private hospital) 3) Kokilaben Hospital, Mumbai (Private hospital) 4) Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre, Delhi (Charitable hospital) 5) Medanta The Medicity, Delhi (Private hospital) 6) Max Super Speciality Hospital, Delhi (Private hospital) Hope this answer helps you.

My aunt has been diagnosed with adenocarcinoma. She has been given 6 chemo cycles in Bangladesh. Her EGFR report is negative. Kindly suggest me which is the best hospital in India for her treatment.

Team ClinicSpots replied

18th July, 2019 at 11:13 am

Hello Saba, The negative EGFR report means that the lung cancer tumor cells do not have the mutation. Hello Tracy, Since you have not mentioned the stage of the cancer, we will list down the cancer treatment by stage. Generally, people who have colon cancers that has not spread to different parts, usually have surgery as the first line treatment. Chemotherapy can also be given along with surgery. Stage 0 colon cancer In stage 0, colon cancer is in the inner lining of the colon. Generally, surgery is given as the only treatment. Stage I colon cancer In stage I colon cancer, the cancer has grown deep in the layers of the colon wall but not outside the colon wall. The standard treatment for this stage is surgery. You will not require any other treatment. Stage II colon cancer In stage II colon cancer, the cancer has grown through the wall of the colon and maybe into nearby tissues. Surgery is done to remove the part of the colon that contains cancer along with nearby lymph nodes. Your doctor may advice you, adjuvant chemotherapy (chemotherapy given after surgery). Stage III colon cancer In stage III colon cancer, the cancer has spread to the nearby lymph nodes but not in any other parts of the body. The standard treatment used at this stage is surgery combined with chemotherapy. The surgery is done to remove the part of the colon having cancer along with the nearby lymph nodes followed by the adjuvant chemotherapy. Radiation therapy or chemotherapy may be the options available for the people who are not healthy enough to get the surgery done. Stage IV colon cancer In stage IV colon cancer, the cancer has spread to other parts of the organ and tissues. Generally, it spreads to the liver, but it may spread to other parts like lungs, brain or distant lymph nodes. In most of the cases, only surgery is unable to cure the cancer. Surgery is done to remove the part of the colon that has cancer. Also, surgery is done to remove the areas that has spread in other parts. Chemotherapy is given before and after the surgery. If the cancer has spread too much, chemotherapy is the main treatment. Hope this answer helps you.
