Types of Lung Cancer

Now, we will brief you about the types of lung cancer.

Generally, there are two types of lung cancer: non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC) & small lung cancer (SCLC). Stages of lung cancer are based on whether it is local or has spread from the lungs to the other organs or lymph nodes. As lungs are large, the tumor can grow easily in them for a long time before they are detected. Sometimes, symptoms such as coughing and fatigue occur where people assume that they have other respiratory issues because of this reason, early stage of lung cancer is difficult to detect.

Whereas, the third type of lung cancer is lung carcinoid tumor where cancer cells grow out of control & affects other cells in nearby areas. This tumor is uncommon & tend to grow slower than the other types of lung cancer.

Now, let us give an overview of types of lung cancer:

• Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) : Nearly nine out of every 10 cases are NSCLC. According to a data, about 80% to 85% of lung cancer is NSCLC. It has three subtypes which start with a different type of lung cells which are Adenocarcinoma, Squamous cell( epidermoid) carcinoma, & larger cell(undifferentiated) carcinoma which could lead to NSCLC overall. They are generally grouped together. The approach to treatment & prognosis is often similar.

• Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) : This type of lung cancer grows faster and spreads more quickly than the NSCLC,because of its aggressive nature. About 10% to 15% of all lung cancer cases are from small cell lung cancer. This is slightly more common in men. Although, cancer cells are small they grow rapidly & create tumors in the lungs. These cancer cells multiply & then spreads to the other parts of the body which include the brain, liver & bone etc.

• Lung carcinoid tumor : It is a type of cancerous tumor made up of neuroendocrine cells. These cells are found throughout the body, including the lungs. As they are similar to endocrine cells because both produce hormones or hormone-like substances. In other ways, they resemble nerve cells because both can secrete neurotransmitters. In fact, only about 3 out of 10 carcinoid tumors are found in the lungs. There are two types of lung carcinoid tumors: typical and atypical.

Lung carcinoid tumors are rare and tend to grow slower than other types of lung cancers. They are made up of special kinds of cells called neuroendocrine cells. A carcinoid tumor starts from cells of the diffuse neuroendocrine system.

Neuroendocrine cells are like nerve cells (neurons), but they also make hormones like cells of the endocrine system (endocrine cells). They receive messages (signals) from the nervous system and respond by making and releasing hormones. Neuroendocrine cells are found in almost every organ of the body & these hormones control many body functions too.

Whereas, in the lungs, this helps to control airflow, blood flow & help to control the growth of other types of lung cells. Lung carcinoid destroys these cells & affected nearby organs.

After diagnosis, it is important to know what type of lung cancer you have because it affects your treatment options and your outlook (prognosis). If you aren’t sure which type of lung cancer you are suffering from, it is suggested you, consult a Cancer Doctor(oncologist) so, that you get the right treatment according to the type of cancer.

The treatment of lung cancer is more easy and successful if detected in the early stages, which is not always the case because this type of cancer does not have obvious symptoms and mostly it is diagnosed in the later stages.

  • Stage 1 - Cancer is discovered in the lung but it has not yet spread outside the lung
  • Stage 2 - Cancer is diagnosed in the lung and in the surrounding lymph nodes
  • Stage 3 - Cancer is found in the lung and the lymph nodes in the middle of the chest
  • Stage 3 (i) - Cancer is detected in the lymph nodes but only on the side of the chest where it started growing
  • Stage 3 (ii) - Cancer is found in the lymph node in the opposite side of the chest or above the collar bone
  • Stage 4 - Cancer has spread in both the lung, in the area surrounding the lungs and it has spread in the body as well.

Lung Cancer causes/Risk factors

  • Passive smoking - People who are in continuous exposure to the tobacco smoke can also develop lung cancer
  • Exposure to radon - It is the second leading cause of cancer in the world and it is the prime reason for lung cancer among the non-smoker
  • Air pollution - Air pollution raises the risk of lung cancer which mainly occurs in cities with high road traffic.
  • Family history - It your relatives had lung cancer then you are likely to develop lung cancer due to the shared genes among the family members.

If the lung cancer is detected in stage 1 then the survival rate is 70% and if the detection is done in stage 3 then the survival rate goes down to 20%. But most of the patients report in stage 4 where the cure rate is very low.

Hello, The treatment for lung cancer will depend on the stage of cancer, age of the patient, his/her general condition. But mainly the treatment includes - 1. Surgery The surgeon removes the affected part or sometimes a lobe or entire lung depending on all the parameters of the patient. Types of surgeries are- Wedge resection, Segmental resection, Lobectomy, and Pneumonectomy. Doctors may also remove lymph nodes from the chest to check for cancer. The doctor may also suggest chemotherapy or radiation therapy before surgery in order to shrink cancer if it is large. Also, the same may be done in case recurrence is suspected. 2. Radiation therapy It is also recommended in whom surgery is not recommended as the first line of treatment. 3. Chemotherapy Chemotherapy along with adjuvant treatment to surgery also is given to relieve pain and other symptoms in advanced cancer. 4. Radiosurgery Radiosurgery can be advised to people with small lung cancers who can't undergo surgery. It may be given in metastasis of cancer. 5. Targeted drug therapy It is also one of the treatments available but usually used in advance cancer. 6. Immunotherapy Immunotherapy is a type of cancer treatment which helps your immune system fight cancer. Hope our answer helps you.

Cancer treatment not only depends on stage of cancer but also on age of person, type of cancer, associated comorbidities. So please consult an oncologist and go ahead with treatment. Normally along with surgery, chemo and radiotherpy are given which have good results. Newer therapies like targeted drug therapies, immunotherapies too are there with few of them FDA approved. . In advanced cancer palliative care is of more importance when routine treatment are not preferred .Regular follow up with doctor will be of help. Consult an oncologist. Hope our answer helps you.

Adjuvant therapy may include radiation, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy. Radiotherapy also can be part of palliative care to improve quality of life in the patients who do not respond to surgery or chemotherapy, genetic and biomarker testing are helping in the personalized management of the various forms of lung cancer. But metastatic cancers are difficult to treat. Palliative care is very important.Consult an oncologist. . Hope our answer helps you.

Hello, Lung Cancer have two stages – 3A and 3B. The treatment options decided by a doctor for stage 3 lung cancer will be based on the stage of cancer and the overall health of the patient. Treatment options for Stage 3A Lung Cancer include: • Chemotherapy to shrink the tumor followed by surgery • Radiation to shrink the tumor before surgery • Surgery followed by chemotherapy to prevent reoccurrence • Surgery followed by radiation to prevent reoccurrence • Chemotherapy, radiation, or both when surgery is not possible • Targeted Therapy • Immunotherapy Treatment options for Stage 3B Lung Cancer include: • Chemotherapy • Radiation therapy • Targeted therapy • Chemotherapy and radiation in combination Surgery is not often an option given in the stage 3B because of the extent of tumor growth and additional organs involved. Hope this answer has solved your query.
