What are the types of Hip replacement surgery in India?

There are two major types of Hip replacement surgeries in India. But different hip replacement components and surgical techniques might be used.

The following are the types of hip replacement surgeries, let me explain you these types quickly.

Total Hip Replacement :

total-hip-replacement

Total hip replacement is a common procedure, which is preferred by patients from abroad as well.

Moreover, the cost of total hip replacement surgery in India attracts international patients as it is pocket friendly than other countries.

It is done to replicate the action of the natural hip joint. In a total hip replacement, the femoral head of the thigh bone (ball) and the acetabulum (socket) is replaced by artificial ball and socket.

The artificial joint components are fixed into the bone with acrylic cement. In case of younger and active patients, one part or sometimes both part are inserted without the cement, if the cement isn’t inserted then the surfaces of the implants are roughened and polished so that the bone grows onto them.

The bone will continue to renew on its own and make a long-lasting bond on the implants. At times when only one part is cemented, it’s known as a hybrid hip replacement.

The replacement parts maybe of plastic, metal or ceramic and these are used in different combinations.

Some of these combinations include metal-on-plastic, ceramic-on-plastic, ceramic-on-ceramic, and metal-on-metal.

The image below will make it more clear about the procedure of Total hip replacement surgery.

Hip Replacement process

Partial Hip Replacement:

Partial hip replacement is also called as hip hemiarthroplasty. In partial hip replacement only femoral head (the ball) of the damaged hip is replaced with prosthetic material.

The acetabulum (socket joint) is not replaced.

Partial Hip Replacement

This procedure is performed with high accuracy and is comparatively more reasonable than total hip replacement surgery cost in India.

Hip resurfacing :

Hip resurfacing

In this type of surgery, the socket part of the joint and the ball of the thigh bone are resurfaced using a metal component unlike in the total hip replacement surgery where the head of the thigh bone is removed and replaced with an artificial ball.

Patients who undergo this type of surgery have low risk of dislocation and can indulge in a high level of physical activity compared to those who had a total hip replaced.

Hip resurfacing surgery in India is performed by skilled surgeons who have years of experience in this field. Further, this surgery is comparatively more affordable than total hip replacement cost in India.

Revision hip replacement

Revision hip replacement :

It is a surgical procedure, which is performed to replace the worn out hip replacement implant.

This surgery is performed to manage the complications such as dislocation of the implants, infection of hip replacement, or fracture around the hip replacement.

Bilateral hip replacement:

Bilateral hip replacement

When patient is facing degenerative problem in both the hips, then they may be considered for bilateral hip replacement. This surgery is performed simultaneously. However, this may increase the risk of blood Clotting, and blood loss during the surgery.

FAQS

Signs that it might be the time for you to undergo hip replacement surgery are:
• Severe and persistence pain in your hip.
• Swelling and stiffness in your hip.
• If you are facing difficulty in walking and climbing stairs.
• Fracture and injuries in the hip.

Generally, you will have to stay for 1 to 4 days in the hospital, depending upon how quickly you recover with physiotherapy.

After the hip replacement surgery most of the patients are able to walk on the same day or the next day of the surgery. Most of them can resume their daily routine work within first 3 to 6 weeks of the surgery.

Your ability to run again depends on various factors like type of implant used, surgical approach, post surgical result, and your doctor’s skill as it will increase the chances of positive results.

Consult your doctor as he will be able to tell you after examining the condition of your joint, that when you are at minimal risk for dislocation and don’t need any precautions.
Generally, people take precautions for approximately 90 days after the surgery.

It depends on your recover speed, each patient recovers from surgery at different pace. Most often, you will have to use a walker for at least 4-6 weeks.

The average time taken to perform the hip replacement surgery is generally 1-2 hours. Sometimes it might take more than 2 hours to perform the surgery depending upon the complexity of the surgery.

The average hip replacement surgery cost in India ranges from ₹1,50,000 to ₹3,00,000 depending upon several factors like type of implant, surgery approach, etc.

Good Day, Could you please tell me if it's possible for a person with COPD to undergo hip replacement surgery. I have been having COPD for the last six years or so and now I have just found out that both my hips need to be replaced. Of course I will do it one at a time and hope to do it at a hospital in India. An early response would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Dr. Babita Goel replied

Patients with COPD represent a high risk group but COPD per say is not a contraindication for any surgery. It all depends on patient’s general condition. Once the doctor gives fitness, surgery can be planned. Preoperative check-up of the respiratory system is necessary in order to prevent and avoid complications. The intraoperative care with respiratory and hemodynamic monitoring as well as postoperative care in the ICU will take of everything.Consult an orthopedic surgeon, physician for help. Hope our answer helps you.

Hi may i know For hip arthroplasty which type of implant is best for 50 year old and how much does it cost

Dr. Babita Goel replied

21st December, 2019 at 04:43 pm

As per my understanding you want to know which types of implant is best for hip arthroplasty. There are mainly two types of surgeries. Total hip replacement (also called total hip arthroplasty), in which the damaged bone and cartilage is removed and replaced with prosthetic components. The other type of surgery is hemiarthroplasty, which involves replacing half of the hip joint hip resurfacing and hip replacement. The choice of implant depends on the type of surgery. Consult an orthopedic, who will help you to decide on the type of surgery required by the patient, and also the implant. Consult an orthopedic. Hope our answer helps you.

As per my understanding you are inquiring about total hip replacement. A total hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which the diseased cartilage and bone of the hip joint is surgically replaced with artificial materials. Total hip replacements are performed most commonly in patients having progressively worsening of severe arthritis in the hip joint, degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis), aging bony fractures of the hip joint, rheumatoid arthritis and others. The cost may get doubled if you are undergoing hip replacement for both the sides. The Cost of total hip replacement depends on several factors such as: ·Hospital (whether it is a government hospital or private hospital) ·The city in which the hospital is situated ·Types of implant used ·Surgery approach (traditional approach or minimally invasive approach) The overall cost of your surgery can increase due to additional costs such as: ·Medical tests that you need to undergo before and after surgery. ·Medicines prescribed. ·Physiotherapy cost All these factors together will decide the total cost for your bilateral total hip replacement surgery. Hope this answer helps you.
