Cost Hospitals Why India? Success rate Risks FAQ

What is the knee replacement surgery cost in India?

The knee replacement surgery cost in India is approximately between Rs. 1,50,000 to Rs. 3,80,000 ($2152 to 5452) that makes knee replacement cost in India quite low compared to the western countries.

  • For a single knee replacement you will have to pay ₹2,00,000 to ₹3,80,000 ($2869.64 to $ 5452.31)
  • For the bilateral knee replacement surgery done in a single sitting ₹3,20,000 to ₹4,20,000 ($4638 to $6087)

Generally, the cost will depend on the type of knee replacement:

You must be thinking why cost differs amongst the types of knee replacement in India?

  • Unilateral Total Knee Replacement: The cost of unilateral total knee replacement is comparatively lesser than bilateral total knee replacement because in unilateral total knee replacement only one knee is operated and damaged parts are replaced by prosthesis implants. It will cost you around ₹1,61,000 to ₹2,47,000.
  • Bilateral Total Knee Replacement: The cost is higher when it comes to bilateral total knee replacement because here both the knees are operated and the number of days you need to stay at the hospital is generally more. The cost of bilateral Total knee replacement ranges from ₹2, 62,000 to ₹4,26,000.
  • Partial Knee Replacement: Partial knee replacement will cost you less because; only the damaged part of your knee either the inside or outside part is replaced. Partial Knee replacement will cost you up to ₹1, 50,000 to ₹ 2,20,000.
  • Revision Knee Replacement: Cost of Revision Knee Replacement is even higher because it is more complicated and difficult to perform the surgery as surgeons have to remove the original implants. It may cost you up to ₹2,85,4150 to ₹469050.
Types of Knee Replacement Cost in Rupees Cost in USD
Unilateral Total Knee Replacement ₹1,61,000 to ₹2,47,000 ($2319.46 to $ 3558.43)
Bilateral Total Knee Replacement ₹2,62,000 to ₹4,26,000 ($3774.52 to $6137.21)
Partial Knee Replacement ₹1,50,000 to ₹2,20,000 ($2152.23 to $3156.60)
Revision Knee Replacement ₹2,84,150 to ₹4,69,050 ($4093.63 to $6757.41)

What is knee replacement?

Knee replacement is a surgical procedure where your affected/or worn out knee joint is replaced with prosthetic implant to relieve pain and disability. It is also known as knee arthroplasty.

Generally, knee replacement is performed for arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis), and also for joint injury.

What are the types of Knee Replacement?

There are different types of knee replacement surgery available in India. According to the condition of your knee and your general health, the orthopedic surgeon will decide which type of knee surgery is the best for you.

Total knee replacement

This is the most common type of knee replacement surgery. The surgeon will remove the damaged bone and cartilage from your thighbone, shinbone and knee cap. He will replace it with artificial joints which are made up of metal, plastic or ceramics.

Total knee replacement
Partial knee replacement
Partial knee replacement

Partial knee replacement is done to replace only one part of your damaged knee. It can replace either the medial part (inside) part, lateral (outside) part or the kneecap (known as kneecap replacement).

Revision or Complex knee replacement

This type of surgery is needed when you are undergoing second or third replacement surgery on the same knee. Also, people with major bone loss, deformity, fracture or weak ligaments in the knee may need a complex knee replacement. Complex knee replacements have a longer stem so that it can be secured firmly into the bone cavity. The surgeon may use extra pieces of plastic or metal in place of badly damaged or removed bone.

Revision or Complex knee replacement
Minimally invasive surgery

Usually 8 to 12inch incision is made during knee replacement surgery. But nowadays, surgeons perform minimally invasive surgery where 3 to 5 inch incisions are made. The patients have to deal with lesser pain and also the recovery is quicker.

Bilateral knee replacement
Bilateral knee replacement

If you are suffering from pain, arthritis or damaged cartilage in both your knees then you have the option of undergoing the knee replacement surgery in both your legs at the same time.

Knee replacement surgery procedure:
Step 1
Step 1

Doctor will diagnose your knee by taking several tests. After seeing the result of your tests he will suggest you the type of knee replacement that suits you the best.

Step 2
Step 2

Your surgeons will make a longitudinal incision at the middle of the kneecap and will lift up the kneecap to the side, so that he can get the full overview of the joint.

Step 2
Step 3
Step 3

Further, Surgeon will remove the damaged bone and cartilage from tibia and femur joint, and a spacer block is placed between the tibia and femur joint to check the extension and ligament tension.

Step 4
Step 4

After this doctor will remove the anterior and posterior part of the femoral condyles, so that prosthetic implant can fit into it. If your kneecap is also damaged, then doctor will remove the damaged part of the kneecap.

Step 4
Step 5
Step 5

Now surgeons will attach the prosthetic implant with help of the bone cement, and finally he will check the range of motion of the joint.

Post Operative care:

After the knee replacement surgery in India, you are likely to stay in the hospital for 3 to 5 days.

  • The day after your surgery you are made to stand and encouraged to walk with the help of the walker.
  • You will be advised to use the continuous passive motion (CPM) machine after the surgery as it speeds up recovery and reduces pain and bleeding.
  • The physical therapists will teach you how to position your knees and legs as the incorrect position may cause injury to your new knee. The exercise will help you regain full movement of the knee and leg.
  • Special compression stockings are worn to improve blood flow and minimize the risk of blood clots.
  • You are advised to move your ankle up and down so that it improves blood flow and decreases swelling.

Here I am listing some of the tips to take care of your knee after the surgery.

• Always use walker and crutches to walk.
• Put pillows under your lower legs for elevation.
• Take blood thinning medicines (prescribed by doctors) to reduce the risk of blood clots.
• You should exercise daily.
• Use ice pack for swelling.
• Don’t twist your knee.
• Try not to sit in cross leg position.

How much time does it take to recover from knee replacement surgery?

Probably you may stop using a walker or crutches within six weeks of surgery and slowly return to your daily routine. It is advisable to use a cane while walking and gradually walk without support. However, it may take around three months for the pain and swelling to subside.

Risks involved in knee replacement surgery

Basically, most of the people do not suffer from any major complications however listed below are some of the risks involved in knee replacement surgery:

  • Pain and swelling: It is common to experience pain and swelling after the surgery. But the severity may vary from person to person. Usually, pain killers are prescribed to manage the pain for a short period. But if the pain persists for a longer period then other treatments may be recommended.
    Pain and swelling

  • Blood clots: Forming of blood clots called deep vein thrombosis in the legs is one of the biggest risks. They can break free and travel to the lungs and block the blood flow which can be life threatening. You can prevent clots from forming by wearing compression devices and moving your legs.
    Blood clots

  • Infections risks: There is always a chance of infection when there is an opening in the skin. The precautions are taken by the surgeon while operating to prevent infection but you should be aware of the signs of infection like swelling, redness, discharge from the operated site and fever and chills. If you have any of this symptoms then contact the doctor immediately so that he can prescribe antibiotics to overcome infection.
    Infections risks

  • Nerve and artery damage: This is highly uncommon but if a nerve or blood vessel gets cut by the surgeon during surgery, then a second surgery is done to rectify the damage. You may lose the feeling of sensation or movement due to the cut in the nerve and in rare cases, it might be permanent.
  • Allergic reaction: In rare cases, people develop an allergic reaction to metal components used in the implants. They can cause an allergic reaction such as rashes, swelling or blisters. To avoid such a scenario, it is best to test for metal allergies before the surgery if your skin reacts to metal jewellery.
  • Implant failure: Sometimes the new joint can wear out, loosen or lose its stability due to which you may experience constant pain or stiffness after the surgery. In such cases, you will need to replace the joint with another procedure.

    Implant failure
FAQ

The average cost of knee replacement surgery ranges from ₹1,50,000 to ₹4,20,000, depending upon the various factors such as types of surgery, knee implants, and surgery approach.

There is no such best age for knee replacement. Surgery is recommended on the basis of the patient’s disability and pain. But most of the patients who undergo this surgery are between 50 to 80 years.

Most of the patients who undergo knee replacement surgery are able to restart their normal routine work within 6 weeks of the surgery. But it some cases it may take more than 4 months to recover fully.

After the knee surgery, you need to use a firm mattress for sleeping and keep changing the position when it becomes uncomfortable. While sleeping, always put a pillow between your knees. Avoid sleeping on your stomach.

Most of the patients start the basic movement on the day of the surgery itself. One can expect to be walking with support within 3 to 6 days of the surgery.

Just like other surgical procedure, knee replacement also carries risks. Some of the risks involved in this procedure are infection, blood clots, pain, and swellings.

Hello, If you are medically fit you can go for total knee replacement (TKR) surgery, one at a time or both depending on your doctor’s decision and your preference. Total knee replacement means replacement of damaged or worn surfaces of the knee, replacing with an implant/prosthesis. The patient gets relief from the pain and increased mobility in day to day activity. If everything goes well than the quality of life improves to a great extent. Lifestyle modifications like correct diet, regular walks, weight control, yoga, and destressing are important part of recovery. Please consult an orthopedic for further guidance and help on this. Hope our answer helps you.

Hello Hilal, Knee replacement is safe for diabetic and hypertension patients, but these ailments have to be controlled at the time of your surgery. If you are suffering from advanced Parkinson’s then knee replacement is not recommended, but it can be done in case of early and controlled disease. Hope this answer helps you!
