Breast Cancer Treatment in India

Cancer is usually a devastating experience for the patient as well as their families. We want our visitors to acquire the most relevant information which is essential for their condition and would really help them get in their fight against cancer.

Usually, Cancer treatment is done with a step-by-step procedural method, in which, the tumour is removed and then further options are performed to make sure that cancer doesn’t re-occur.

Still, it is safe to say that detection of breast cancer in its earlier stages yields better results while providing treatment for the same, as doctors can then start the necessary treatment on the patient.

Breast Cancer Treatments

Treatment options for Breast Cancer in India

  • Surgery:

Surgery is performed to remove either only the tumour or the entire cancer-affected breast of the patient.

You will find two sub-types of surgical options for breast cancer treatment – Lumpectomy (Breast conservation surgery) and Mastectomy.

  • Radiation therapy:

Radiation therapy is an important treatment which uses high energized x-rays to destroy cancerous cells.

It has different methods – External-beam radiation therapy, Brachytherapy, Proton therapy.

  • Chemotherapy:

After the surgery, Chemo is given to the patients to reduce recurrence chances of the tumour. Injections/drugs are used to kill cancer cells in the breast.

Not only is this treatment useful in killing the cancerous cells after the surgery, but it is also useful in shrinking the tumour before the surgery.

  • Immunotherapy:

In this, the body’s natural immune system is boosted to fight the cancerous cells.

Some breast cancers don’t respond to other treatments therefore, in such scenarios, immunotherapy is used to treat such breast cancer.

The number of side-effects which follows after this treatment is less for this treatment.

Right now, there are limited numbers of drugs approved by the FDA, and a large number of drugs are being tested in clinical trials for further approval.

  • Hormone therapy:

In some cases, patients who have breast cancer cells with hormonal receptors such as – estrogen and progesterone are given hormone therapy.

Therefore, in such cases, hormone therapy is used to stop the estrogen-induced growth of the tumour.

  • Targeted therapy:

There are special characteristics of the cancer cells, which promotes the growth of cancer. Targeted therapy is used to target these characteristics which help in inhibiting the growth of cancer in the breast.

It is observed that normal cells are less affected by this option compared to chemotherapy.

I want to know about Triple negative breast cancer, my aunt was tested for breast cancer and her doctor hinted that she had signs of this specific type of breast cancer

Dr. Babita Goel replied

28th January, 2020 at 03:33 pm

The term triple-negative breast cancer means that the cancer cells don’t have estrogen or progesterone receptors and does not make too much of the protein called HER2. ( therefore the cells test "negative" on all 3 tests.) Triple-negative breast cancer has less treatment options available than other types of invasive breast cancer. The reason being the cancer cells do not have enough estrogen or progesterone receptors or HER2 protein for hormone therapy or targeted drugs to work. Teatment options are chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery mainly .But consulting clinician on time and starting the treatment is important. Regualr follow up with doctor with lifestyle modifiactions and councelling will help. Consult an oncologist. Hope our answer helps you.

I want to know if breasts are also removed in breast cancer surgeries or are there any other methods in which there is no need of removing the whole breasts.

Dr. Babita Goel replied

13th January, 2020 at 10:54 am

The biology and behavior of breast cancer will be considered for planning the treatment of breast cancer. Treatment options also depends on several factors like • The tumor’s subtype, including hormone receptor status • The stage of the tumor • The patient’s age, general health, menopausal status, and preferences • The presence of known mutations in inherited breast cancer genes, such as BRCA1 or BRCA2. There are some general steps commonly preffered for treating early-stage and locally advanced breast cancer. Doctors generally recommend surgery to remove the tumor in breast.Though the goal of surgery is to remove all the cancer which is visible but microscopic cells sometimes remain behind. Therefore another surgery can be required. For cancers which are large or are fast growing the clinician suggest systemic treatment with chemotherapy or hormonal therapy before surgery. This is called neo-adjuvant therapy. This helps in shrinking the tumor which is easy to operate; also breast can be preserved in some cases. After surgery it is important to check for recurrence. Then adjuvant therapy is advised. Adjuvant therapies may include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and/or hormonal therapy When surgery to remove the cancer is not possible, it is called inoperable, and then Chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation therapy, and/or hormonal therapy may be given to shrink the cancer. For recurrent cancer, treatment options depend on how the cancer was first treated and the characteristics of the cancer. What will be the line of treatment in your case will depend on your clinical condition. You can take one more opinion to a clear understanding of your concerns. Consult an oncologist. Hope our answer helps you.

Hello, Surgery is the main treatment for DCIS. The most common type of breast cancer is ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), indicating the cancer cell growth starts in the milk ducts. The goal of therapy for DCIS is to prevent the development of invasive breast cancer. Therapeutic approaches include surgery, radiation therapy, and adjuvant endocrine therapy. Patients with DCIS undergo local treatment with breast-conserving therapy (BCT) or mastectomy. BCT consists of lumpectomy (also called breast-conserving surgery, wide excision, or partial mastectomy) followed in most cases by adjuvant radiation. Patients found to have an invasive or micro-invasive disease during surgery should be managed accordingly. Although mastectomy achieves excellent long-term survival with a local recurrence rate on the order of 1 per cent, it provides overly aggressive treatment for many women. BCT has less morbidity but is associated with a higher risk of local recurrence. Hormone therapy and radiation therapy are adjuvant therapies if needed considered. Consult an oncologist for further line of treatment. Hope my answer helps you.

Diagnosis involves complete physical check-up of the breast followed by mammography, ultrasound, breast MRI and biopsy. Routine blood pathology is also done. Treatment for all types of IDC is planned depending on the stage, type of cancer, age of woman mainly. On evaluating all factors mainly women will undergo a combination of any of the following treatments: • Lumpectomy if needed Mastectomy. • Lymph Node biopsy Sentinel and axillary depending on the spread of cancer. • Breast reconstruction is important part of treatment. • Radiation and Chemotherapy are given before and later as per necessity. • Hormonal therapy is a very important therapy to control cancer. • Biologic targeted therapy or targeted drug therapy is also used these days. Please consult an oncologist for further guidance. Hope our answer helps you.

I want to know all details about the breast cancer treatment process and about the treatment cost.

Team ClinicSpots replied

30th September, 2019 at 11:07 am

Hello, The biology and behavior of breast cancer will be considered for planning the treatment of breast cancer. Treatment options also depends on several factors like • The tumor’s subtype, including hormone receptor status • The stage of the tumor • The patient’s age, general health, menopausal status, and preferences • The presence of known mutations in inherited breast cancer genes, such as BRCA1 or BRCA2. There are some general steps commonly preferred for treating early-stage and locally advanced breast cancer. Doctors generally recommend surgery to remove the tumor in breast. Though the goal of surgery is to remove cancer which is visible but microscopic cells sometimes remain behind. Therefore, another surgery may be required. For cancers which are large or are fast growing the doctor will suggest a systemic treatment with chemotherapy or hormonal therapy before surgery. This is called neo-adjuvant therapy. This helps in shrinking the tumor which is easy to operate; also breast can be preserved in some cases. Also, after surgery, it is important to check for recurrence. Then adjuvant therapy is advised. Adjuvant therapies may include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and/or hormonal therapy. When surgery to remove the cancer is not possible, it is called inoperable, and then Chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation therapy, and/or hormonal therapy may be given to shrink the cancer. For recurrent cancer, treatment options depend on how the cancer was first treated and the characteristics of the cancer. Hope our answer helps you.

Hello, Your wife is having a recurrence of breast cancer. The tests will help in determining the spread and stage of cancer. The suggested treatments are: • Hormone therapy- since the test shows ER/PR+ and HER-ve hormone therapy will be the most considered option. • Targeted therapy • Bone-building drugs • Radiation therapy and surgery may be used according to signs and symptoms. In some cases to control advanced cancer, you can always take one more opinion and take the decision accordingly. We would suggest that you consult a good oncologist for the second opinion. Wish your wife a speedy recovery. Hope our answer helps you.

Team ClinicSpots replied

22nd April, 2019 at 05:47 pm

Hello, As you have mentioned the details from your biopsy report we will try our best to explain it to you. · Invasive Ductal Carcinoma - It means that cancer has spread from the mammary glands to the surrounding breast tissues. · Grade 2 - The grade of tumour cells indicate the size and the growth rate of the cancerous cells. In your case it is grade 2, which means the cancer cells have slightly changed from the normal cells. They are varying in shape and growing faster than normal cells. · ER & PR - ER & PR negative indicates that the cancer cells doesn’t grow in response to Estrogen and Progesterone. · HER2 - Some breast cancer cells have too much of the growth promoting protein called HER2. HER2 score 0 indicates that the patient does not need to be treated with drugs which target HER2. Since ER/PR & HER2 is negative, ie, your reports says you have Triple Negative Breast Cancer. We suggest that you quickly consult an oncologist.

Team ClinicSpots replied

17th April, 2019 at 06:22 pm

Hello Anjuman, As you have mentioned we will try to answer your 3 questions. 1) We are afraid that the details you have mentioned is not enough to determine, at what stage the cancer is now. The stage of cancer depends upon different factors like the: · Size of the tumour · How close the tumour is to the lymph nodes and whether it has been effected · Whether the tumour has spread to other organs From the details you have given we can only say that the cancer is stage 2 or greater. 2) Treatment for breast cancer depends on at what stage the cancer is in. There are different kind of treatments available for breast cancer. These are the different treatments available for different stages of breast cancer: Stage 0 – * Mastectomy (Surgical Removal of breast) * Lumpectomy with and without radiation(Surgical Removal of Lump) * Hormonal therapy Stage 1 – * Total Mastectomy * Lumpectomy with radiation * Surgical Removal of Lymph nodes * Chemotherapy(May be recommended) * Hormonal Therapy *Targeted Therapy Stage 2 – * Total Mastectomy with or without radiation * Lumpectomy with radiation * Surgical Removal of Lymph nodes * Chemotherapy (Commonly Recommended) * Hormonal Therapy * Targeted Therapy Stage 3 - * Total Mastectomy with or without radiation * Chemotherapy followed by Lumpectomy and Radiation * Hormonal Therapy * Targeted Therapy Stage 4 – * Surgery followed by radiation * Chemotherapy (Mostly recommended) * Hormonal Therapy * Targeted Therapy * Treatment to other parts of the body is also done in case cancer has spread. 3) The cost of breast cancer depends on the stage depends on the stage and intensity of the cancer. The cost of surgery in a private hospital will be around the range 4000 USD - 6000 USD( 278,000 INR - 417,000INR ) Chemotherapy prices entirely depend on the prices of drugs. For a rough estimation the cost range would be 800 USD - 1500 USD ( 56,000 INR - 105,000 INR ) We recommend you to visit an oncologist quickly. We hope this information helps you and we wish your mother a speedy recovery.
