Breast Cancer Treatments in India

Let us give you some insights about the breast cancer treatments available in India.

The decisions regarding the breast cancer treatment in India is made with the mutual understanding of both (patient and doctor) after taking into consideration the current stage of breast cancer.

The treatment is done by the following methods:

1. Surgical Treatment : The surgical treatment involves breast-conserving surgery (BCS) or mastectomy. Also, in BCS only the tissue affected by cancer plus a node of normal tissue is removed. In surgical treatment, the primary goal is to remove cancer and determine its stage. With BCS (also known as partial mastectomy or lumpectomy), only cancerous tissue and a rim of normal tissue (tumor margin) are removed. Hence, BCS is generally not an option for those diagnosed with a high tumor-to-breast ratio.

2. Radiation Therapy : In a simple term, the radiation therapy is nothing but a method of killing the cancer cells from the breast which a surgery fails to kill. It is done with the help of high energy beams. Radiation therapy can be used as external beam radiation, brachytherapy, or a combination of both. This method is suggested depending on the type, stage, and location of the tumor, as well as patient characteristics, and doctor and patient preference.

3. Systemic Therapy : Let us shed some light that the systemic therapy is a drugs/substance which travels in the bloodstream and affects all parts of the body. And the process which can be used for systemic therapy includes Chemotherapy, hormone therapy and targeted therapy.

a. Chemotherapy : According to the research done by American Cancer Society, it has been found that combinations of drugs are more effective than one drug alone for treatment of early-stage breast cancer. Depending on the combination of drugs used i.e. adjuvant and neoadjuvant, chemotherapy is usually given for 3 to 6 months. The treatment by both the drugs is most effective if the dose is complete and given in the assigned time frame without any delay.

b. Hormone (anti-estrogen) therapy : When a hormone is produced by the ovaries in addition to other tissues called as Estrogen, promoting the growth of breast cancer cells. The patients with these tumors can be treated with hormone therapy to lower the estrogen levels or block the effects of estrogen on the growth of cancer cells. These drugs are different from menopausal hormone therapies, which actually increase hormone levels.

c. Targeted therapy : In simple terms, targeted therapy are performed to block the growth of cancer cells by killing the specifically targeted cells which can results in the growth of the tumor, instead of just killing the rapidly dividing cells (e.g. with traditional chemotherapy). So, target therapies are expected to be more effective than older forms of treatments and are less harmful to normal cells.

Hello, Your wife is having a recurrence of breast cancer. The tests will help in determining the spread and stage of cancer. The suggested treatments are: • Hormone therapy- since the test shows ER/PR+ and HER-ve hormone therapy will be the most considered option. • Targeted therapy • Bone-building drugs • Radiation therapy and surgery may be used according to signs and symptoms. In some cases to control advanced cancer, you can always take one more opinion and take the decision accordingly. We would suggest that you consult a good oncologist for the second opinion. Team ClinicSpots replied

Hello, As you have mentioned the details from your biopsy report we will try our best to explain it to you. · Invasive Ductal Carcinoma - It means that cancer has spread from the mammary glands to the surrounding breast tissues. · Grade 2 - The grade of tumour cells indicate the size and the growth rate of the cancerous cells. In your case it is grade 2, which means the cancer cells have slightly changed from the normal cells. They are varying in shape and growing faster than normal cells. · ER & PR - ER & PR negative indicates that the cancer cells doesn’t grow in response to Estrogen and Progesterone. · HER2 - Some breast cancer cells have too much of the growth promoting protein called HER2. HER2 score 0 indicates that the patient does not need to be treated with drugs which target HER2. Since ER/PR & HER2 is negative, ie, your reports says you have Triple Negative Breast Cancer. We suggest that you quickly consult an oncologist.

17th April, 2019 at 06:22 pm

Hello Anjuman, As you have mentioned we will try to answer your 3 questions. 1) We are afraid that the details you have mentioned is not enough to determine, at what stage the cancer is now. The stage of cancer depends upon different factors like the: · Size of the tumour · How close the tumour is to the lymph nodes and whether it has been effected · Whether the tumour has spread to other organs From the details you have given we can only say that the cancer is stage 2 or greater. 2) Treatment for breast cancer depends on at what stage the cancer is in. There are different kind of treatments available for breast cancer. These are the different treatments available for different stages of breast cancer: Stage 0 – * Mastectomy (Surgical Removal of breast) * Lumpectomy with and without radiation(Surgical Removal of Lump) * Hormonal therapy Stage 1 – * Total Mastectomy * Lumpectomy with radiation * Surgical Removal of Lymph nodes * Chemotherapy(May be recommended) * Hormonal Therapy *Targeted Therapy Stage 2 – * Total Mastectomy with or without radiation * Lumpectomy with radiation * Surgical Removal of Lymph nodes * Chemotherapy (Commonly Recommended) * Hormonal Therapy * Targeted Therapy Stage 3 - * Total Mastectomy with or without radiation * Chemotherapy followed by Lumpectomy and Radiation * Hormonal Therapy * Targeted Therapy Stage 4 – * Surgery followed by radiation * Chemotherapy (Mostly recommended) * Hormonal Therapy * Targeted Therapy * Treatment to other parts of the body is also done in case cancer has spread. 3) The cost of breast cancer depends on the stage depends on the stage and intensity of the cancer. The cost of surgery in a private hospital will be around the range 4000 USD - 6000 USD( 278,000 INR - 417,000INR ) Chemotherapy prices entirely depend on the prices of drugs.
