Types of Cataract Surgery in India?

  1. Phacoemulsification :
  2. This is the latest method for the cataract surgery in India and it is usually performed in less than 30 minutes with minimal sedation.

During this surgery, the surgeon will numb your eyes with the eye drops or an injection around the eye. No stitches will be taken to close the wounds and nor even any eye patch is required after the surgery. However, phacoemulsification is not performed using a laser but a femtosecond laser can be used to make an opening in the anterior capsule of the lens immediately prior to the emulsification of the lens.

  3. Extracapsular cataract surgery :
  4. This type of a procedure is used when the lens is very much dense to dissolve or when phacoemulsification is not possible. This type of technique requires an incision so that cataract can be removed from the eye in one single piece without getting fragmented inside the eye. During this process the surgeon will place an artificial lens in the same capsular bag with the phacoemulsification technique. This surgery does require numbing of the eye and an eye patch for the extraction.

  5. Intracapsular cataract surgery :
  6. Intracapsular is the surgical technique which requires larger wound than extracapsular surgery. The surgeon will remove the entire lens along with the surrounding capsules. In this technique the intraocular lens will be completely placed in the different location i.e., in front of the iris.
