IVF treatment in Chennai

IVF is a boon for couples longing to have a child. First of all, let us understand what IVF exactly means. IVF is the abbreviation for In vitro fertilization and is considered as one of the best treatment for some fertility problems. It involves fertilization of the egg outside the body.

IVF is the name given to the original ‘test tube’ baby technique which was developed in 1978 to treat women with damaged fallopian tubes. Till date this remains as one of the important reason for treatment.

Procedure of IVF treatment in Chennai

The IVF procedure may differ slightly from clinic to clinic but the basic steps of IVF treatment in Chennai are similar.

  • Boosting the egg supply: For around 10 to 12 days you will be prescribed Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) which are fertility hormone. They help in increasing the number of eggs which are produced in the ovaries.

  • Monitoring progress: You will be constantly monitored throughout this period. You will have to undergo vaginal ultrasound scans and blood tests so as to keep a check on the ovaries.

  • Collection of the eggs: This minor procedure is conducted under sedation where your eggs will be collected using a hollow needle under ultrasound guidance.

  • Sperm sample: At the time the eggs are collected, your partner will be asked to produce a sperm sample. The sperm are washed and the healthiest sperm is selected.

  • Fertilizing the eggs: The collected eggs and your partner’s sperm are mixed in the laboratory and are checked after 16 to 20 hours to see if they have fertilized. In some cases the egg has to be injected directly with a single sperm, this procedure is called ICSI (intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection).

  • Embryo Transfer: The fertilized eggs which are called embryo are allowed to grow in the laboratory for 3 to 6 days before being transferred to the womb. After about two weeks, pregnancy test is carried out to determine whether the treatment has worked or not. Success rates of IVF starts decreasing as you age. The quality and quantity of eggs lowers as you get older.

What to expect in a normal IVF cycle package?

There are many procedures involved in the IVF treatment and charging separately for each procedure becomes difficult and confusing. So, many centers charge lump sum fee for the infertility treatment cost in Chennai which includes the following procedure, apart from the below given procedure there could be other factors which determine the test tube baby cost in Chennai.:

  1. Tests: Women have to undergo several blood tests for:
    • Screening for conditions affecting pregnancy
    • For checking ovarian reserve
    • To keep check on the hormone levels throughout the cycle
    • To check for pregnancy after embryo transfer Men have to undergo test for semen analysis

  2. Ultrasounds: An ultrasound scan is used by doctors to monitor your ovaries to help decide when to retrieve the eggs. Ultrasound is also used to check the fertility factors such as:
    • The structure and shape of your uterus
    • The volume of the ovaries
    • The texture and thickness of your uterus lining
    • Check your ovaries for the number of eggs which are in reserve

  3. Egg retrieval: This is one of the most intricate procedure during which the eggs for the IVF are surgically removed by the doctor.

  4. Sperm preparation: The sperms are washed and treated to separate the healthiest and strongest sperm to be used for fertilization.

  5. Embryo culturing: After fertilization of the eggs and the sperm, the resulting embryos are cultured in the laboratory so that the best embryos can be chosen for implantation.

  6. Embryo transfer: After around 3-5 days the doctor transfers the embryos into your uterus.
