Apart from Indian patients, thousands of people from abroad visit India for liver transplant surgeries. The number of liver transplant surgeries performed annually keeps on increasing year over year. An estimated more than 2000 liver transplants are performed in India every year.

Liver transplant in India has quite high success rates because of the latest medical technology being leveraged at top hospitals.

A liver transplant is required in cases of end-stage liver disease. Liver damage can be caused by various conditions that specifically target the liver. As a result, the liver is not able to function properly. When no other medical treatment works the last option left is a liver transplant

Some of the conditions that lead to liver transplants are:

  • Cirrhosis- It is a late-stage liver disease. In this condition, the liver is severely scarred. This can be the cause of various infections and may lead to permanent damage to the liver.
  • Acute liver failure- The liver can suddenly and severely lose its function within a short period. It occurs due to liver injury, acute viral hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, or other causes. A liver transplant may be considered as a life-saving measure in such situations.
  • Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) and Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC): These are autoimmune diseases that affect the bile ducts. This leads to inflammation, scarring, and blockage. This can cause end-stage liver disease and require a liver transplant.
  • Metabolic liver diseases- Some metabolic disorders can affect the liver's ability to process and store specific substances. This leads to liver damage.
  • Liver cancer- In cases of liver cancer, a liver transplant is sometimes the only possible treatment left.

  • Diseases Treated: End-stage liver disease, Liver cancer, Wilson's disease

Living Donor

₹12,00,000($16,800) – ₹18,00,000 ($25,200)

Split Type

₹8,50,000 ($12,000) – ₹18,00,000 ($25,200)

  • In this process, the liver is divided into two parts, the left side of the liver is usually recommended for children and the right side is provided for the adult patient as the right-side liver size is bigger than the left side. And this half-healthy liver grows within a week by 85%.
  • Preferably doctors suggest selecting the family member as a donor.
  • Diseases Treated: Pediatric liver diseases, Acute liver failure, Congenital liver diseases

Type of liver transplant

Brief description

Split Donor Transplant

In this procedure, a deceased donor's liver is divided into two segments. It is then transplanted into two recipients. Usually an adult and a child.

Dead Organ Donation Transplant

The liver is taken from a dead donor who has given the consent earlier. The liver is transplanted later into the person who’s in need.

Whole Liver Transplant

The entire liver of a dead donor is transplanted into the recipient’s body. This is the most common among all the types.

Pediatric Liver Transplant

This is performed on children who have end stage liver disease. The child’s liver is replaced with a healthy liver from the deceased person.

Female | 40

A liver transplant is likely the only solution that may help your mother. It is caused when the liver of a person is quite ill, and that doesn't work properly. Symptoms that a liver is not working properly are the following: patients get worn out, have yellow skin or eyes, and also experience tummy pain. The treatment is costly and involves a lot of expenditures due to its magnitude. The doctor needs to see how much the liver is damaged and if the transplantation has become a necessity.
