Questions Answered By Dr. Ninad V Katdare

Hello Sir, one of my friends found blood in his stool somewhat in 2020. As it was not regular and didn't cause any discomfort, he ignored this. Just 2 months back the blood stated shown frequently and he began to experience acute pain in his pelvis. And he consulted a doctor. Now he has been diagnosed with stage three rectal cancer. He stays near Dehradun. Doctor asked him to consult some other place. He is devastated now and confused about what to do now. I am asking on his behalf. We would be thankful if you could suggest a suitable name experienced in handling these stage cases. His family is ready to take him to another city as well.

My father was diagnosed with Esophageal cancer 5 years back and treated with surgery and chemo in Chennai. He was cancer free. But he was recently diagnosed with gastric cancer at an early stage. Doctor asked it is curable but we are anxious cause he is 69 and we really don't know whether he can take this trauma. Please suggest a good hospital in Chennai that is good for Gastric cancer

I've experienced dark blood in my feces and soreness under my right rib cage for the past three weeks. I'm also losing my appetite and becoming incredibly bloated and uncomfortable anytime I eat anything, even if it's only a small amount. I was diagnosed with pancreas cancer after undergoing numerous tests. But my doctor is not telling me anything clearly, he is not answering my queries. which makes me more anxious. Please suggest something to me. I want to go for a second opinion. I live in Patna.

Answered on 23rd May '24

For pancreas cancer we need a PETCT scan and a biopsy (ercp guided if towards the duodenum or ct guided if in the head body or tail of pancreas.) This will give the stage of the disease. Based on the above reports oncologist can guide you further line of treatment.

I am from Jorhat and I was diagnosed with bowel cancer on 27th December. I had a colonoscopy and a CT scan, and the consultant wanted to have an endoscopy, which I have not done yet. But before that I would like to consult with another doctor.

Answered on 23rd May '24

A coloscopy with biopsy and a PETCT scan (or ct scan or thorax, abdomen and pelvis) is mandatory in the complete work up of colon cancer. Colon cancer is one of the few cancers in which there is treatment available right upto the 4th(last) stage. So I advise you to get the colonoscopy and biopsy at the earliest and get the treatment started.

In November I was diagnosed with two lumps in my breast and under my armpit in the lymph nodes, grade 2 cancer. Shared this news only with my elder sister. I am terrified. I am only 29 yrs. Please suggest a reputed doctor in Guwahati and give me an approximate idea of the cost of treatment.

Answered on 23rd May '24

Breast Cancer is now seen in quite a few young ladies. However with advent of quite a few new therapies, it can be completely cured or kept under good control. A PETCT scan will give us an idea regarding the spread. A bilateral mammography will give us an idea regarding the opposite breast. Even if full breast has to be removed sometimes in breast cancer, advances in plastic surgery can help recreate a new breast during the same surgery. A process called whole breast reconstruction. We advise you to not to worry and consult oncologist for latest world class treatment

My father has secondary liver cancer and his condition is deteriorating every day. We can't see him like this. Please advise the next course of action.

Answered on 23rd May '24

In secondary liver cancer, depending on the organ or origin, the treatment can range from complete curative to good palliation. For eg. In colon cancer which has spread to liver, a judicious combination of surgery, chemotherapy and local liver therapies like ablation can completely cure the secondary liver cancer or the right term 'Liver Metastasis'.

Hello sir, my dad was diagnosed with bile duct cancer in October. He is currently 65 years old. He refused to treat because of the terrible adverse effects, and he believes he would have died due to the side effects. Is there any other approach to treat him so that he doesn't have to go through the trauma?

Answered on 23rd May '24

If bile duct cancer is in an early stage, it can be completely cured with surgery. If local regional spread is there, we may need chemotherapy followed by surgery. In last stage also, with chemotherapy and local radiation a good relief of symptoms can be achieved. Non treatment of bile duct cancer will lead to more worse quality of life then the treatment so treatment should be considered at the earliest.

How fast does sarcoma grow?

Answered on 23rd May '24

The growth rate of sarcomas depends on the grade. A low grade sarcoma is a slow growing Tumor which may take even an year to reach 5cm or less. On the other hand, a high grade sarcoma not only increases rapidly in size, it can also spread to other organs, like lung, very fast
