Government eye hospitals in Mumbai are crucial in providing accessible and affordable eye care services to the city's diverse population. These hospitals offer various ophthalmological services, from routine eye check-ups to more specialized treatments and surgeries.
Mumbai is home to several government eye hospitals offering services like cataract phaco surgery, glaucoma specialists, and more. These hospitals are integral to the city's healthcare infrastructure, providing essential eye care services to the population.
In this blog, we will delve into the key aspects of Mumbai government-run eye care facilities offered.
The 2023 Mumbai Eye Disease Study (MEDiS) revealed insights into the effectiveness of eye care in Mumbai. It highlights the need for improvements in service quality and accessibility. This study is particularly relevant for government eye hospitals, as they are often the primary source of eye care for lower-income groups in Mumbai.
The findings from MEDiS guide efforts to enhance the services these hospitals provide, ensuring that all residents of Mumbai have access to quality eye care. The research showed that only a few individuals check their eyes yearly. More people in high-income groups (85%) do it than those in low- and middle-income groups (48%-50%). A significant observation was that most people preferred eye care facilities within 5 kilometres of their residence. Low-income groups tended to favour public facilities.
Let’s shed light on their services, impact, challenges, and their crucial role in ensuring eye health for all.
