Neetu Begum was only 34 years old when medical reports gave her the biggest shock of her life. She was suffering from colon cancer. Worse still, a team of oncologists in her native country, Bangladesh said that she might not live long.
Neetu Begum was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2017. She underwent surgery on the suggestion of her doctors in Bangladesh. However, things took a complicated turn after her surgery. Her stomach felt tight and there was a blockage in her colon. She felt an unbearable pain and her stomach was swelling more with each passing day. Doctors gave up hope on Neetu and said she won’t survive for over a week.
Let's read about Neetu's journey and how ClinicSpots helped her in that.
But Neetu is a fighter, and her will to live is stronger than ever. She looked for treatment options outside Bangladesh. It was then that she found ClinicSpots in India which changed her life forever. ClinicSpots is a medical platform connecting India’s best doctors with patients worldwide. Upon understanding her medical situation, our executives connected with India’s top oncologist, Dr. Suresh Advani. They discussed Neetu's condition in great detail and asked her to travel to India immediately.
Treatment Plan: Upon reaching India on December 17, 2020, Neetu was directly admitted to SL Raheja hospital in Mumbai. Dr. Advani and his associate Dr. Shivam Singla started with IV fluid to make her comfortable. After inspection, the doctor-duo realised that her surgery back in Bangladesh went terribly wrong. The surgery left her bowel obstructed rather than making a way for feces to pass.
Both Dr. Advani and Dr. Singla suggested a second surgery. However, owing to Neetu’s critical condition, many surgeons refused to operate on her. One of ClinicSpots executives decided to take matters into her hands. She directly approached reputed surgeon Dr. Donald John Babu and explained to him Neetu’s condition. Dr. Donald agreed to do the task, but in two phases.
In the first surgery, doctors will place a colostomy bag. This will be followed by three chemotherapy sessions. After completion of the chemotherapy, a second surgery will be done to remove all tumours and place the colostomy bag again.
Due to the critical nature of the operation, the CEOs of SL Raheja hospital Dr. Hiren and Ms. Hiral had a meeting with the entire team. They consulted Dr. Donald John Babu, Dr. Suresh Advani and Dr. Shivam Singla before fixing a date for the surgery. The surgery happened as scheduled and the expert hands of India’s reputed doctors ensured a successful delivery. Neetu started feeling better within a week of surgery.
Neetu began her chemotherapy 21 days after the surgery. She took one session in India and went back to her home in Bangladesh. There, she had two more chemotherapy sessions, after which, she was set to come back to India for her second surgery.
However, Neetu’s family was unwilling to come back to India. The first surgery cost them around INR 15,00,000 (USD 18,869). They didn’t have the financial capability to spend so much again. Moreover, Neetu’s husband left her upon learning of her diagnosis and her parents were her source of constant support.
ClinicSpots executives made them understand that Neetu deserves every chance to live her life and convinced them to come to India. Additionally, they promised to help in whatever way they could to lessen the burden on Neetu’s family.
Neetu and her parents sold off their property and came to India for the second surgery. The surgery was performed by Dr. Kirti Bhushan, a colleague of Dr. Donald John Babu. The surgery was successful and all the tumours were extracted without any further complications. Her uterus and ovaries were also removed but she was cancer free. ClinicSpots executives convinced the hospital to offer discounted rates. The surgery had cost Neetu and her family only INR 5,00,000 (USD 6,285).
Neetu had to take three chemotherapy sessions after the surgery which they decided to take in Bangladesh. But things took an unexpected turn and India went under lockdown due to Covid 19. Neetu and her family couldn’t travel back to Bangladesh and hence began her chemotherapy here. ClinicSpots executives ensured they have all means for a comfortable stay during the lockdown. Amidst the lockdown, they had arranged for accommodation, food, and transportation so Neetu’s treatment was not compromised. After Covid curbs were relaxed a little, our executives arranged for their flight tickets to Bangladesh. Happy and positive, Neetu and her family finally flew back home in May, 2021.
Neetu has been a force of resilience. Her passion and desire to live for more had fuelled a burning desire in her to beat cancer. Her parents’ constant support had only powered Neetu to fight more. They are grateful to ClinicSpots for guiding them the way and for being a constant source of help and support during their stay in India.
