can i take my surgical bra off for a few hours?

Can i take my surgical bra off for a few hours?

Answered on 9th Jan '24

Yes, it is usually possible to take off your surgical bra for several hours inasmuch as you heal well and 8 weeks after a hysterectomy. It’s frequently suggested to wear the bra less and less amount of time until your body get used to it. However, each patient’s recovery and needs may vary so you should follow what your surgeon specifically recommends. The bra gives support and contributes to swelling relief as well as shape modification in healing, so it should not be completely thrown away too early. Consult with your healthcare provider either for an extended period of removal or if you are experiencing discomfort.

It is not advisable to take off your surgical bra for a few hours. The surgical bra provides support and compression to the surgical area, which aids in the healing process. Removing it for an extended period may cause discomfort and delay the healing process.

surgical bra can be removed for few hours while taking showers. But it is advisable to keep it on as much as possible as it helps in providing shape and fullness to the breasts.

  • First 2 weeks: You have to wear a surgical bra, which can be removed only during showers.
  • After 2 to 3 weeks: You will be free to wear either a non-wire supportive bra, or a sports bra all the time.
  • After 4 weeks: You would be able to skip wearing bras at night.
  • After 6 weeks: You can avoid wearing bra occasionally, but for major duration you would still have to wear a bra.
  • After 3 months: You can return to wearing underwire bras, but pay attention to the site of the incision.
  • Note:
    • For the first 3 weeks after surgery, It is recommended that you wear your bra for approximately 23 hours per day -- and you would still have to wear bras after this phase ends, but for a lesser duration.
    • It will take minimum of 2 months for the implants to settle into their final size and form, but they would still need care & attention!
  • Why is wearing bra important?
    • To avoid implant displacement.
