What side effects when stopping birth control pills?
I developed severe palpitations and breathlessness of unknown cause since all tests are normal after 3 years of taking birth control pills to regulate periods. I am considering stopping them as the doctor told me. What are expected side effects that would happen from stopping them?

Gynecologist/Obstetrician
Answered on 25th July '24
Birth control pills are beneficial, but side effects can arise. If experiencing issues, stopping them seems wise. Your menstrual cycle might undergo adjustments - irregular bleeding or heavier flows could occur. This transition phase necessitates patience from your body. Should symptoms persist or worsen after discontinuation, consulting a gynecologist becomes crucial.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) may result in symptoms like irregular menstrual cycles, weight gain, and excessive hair growth. Typically, it's because of hormone imbalances and there are chances it could also run in the family. Managing the issue often requires the adaptation of lifestyle choices such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, and sometimes treatment with medications that can help regulate the cycles and other symptoms. One important point is that it is crucial to track your health and get the right guidance for your particular situation from a gynecologist.

My bleeding is dark red along with small clots so is this withdrawal bleeding or normal periods bleeding as it's been 14 days after taking levenogestrel and I am 4 days away from my predicted period date

Dark red bleeding with small clots can occur as a side effect of hormonal changes caused by the medication, especially as your body adjusts. Since you’re nearing your predicted period, it’s possible this could be related to your upcoming cycle. If bleeding remains heavy, is accompanied by severe pain, or raises concerns, it’s advisable to consult a gynecologist. They can provide tailored guidance and ensure your health is monitored. Here's what your symptoms indicate - there's a possibility you're pregnant. The test revealing one dark line and one faint line could signify early pregnancy. And that brownish, reddish blood? My wife had her period start on August 4th and we had sex using the pull-out method on August 8th, during her period. She has a 35-day menstrual cycle. She is not experiencing any pregnancy symptoms. We had sex again on September 3rd, also using the pull-out method. Can you please assess the likelihood of pregnancy? Starting tomorrow, she is experiencing white discharge, uterine pain, mood swings, and fluctuating feelings of cold and hot.
Female | 19
The odds of conception are slim because of the period you had sex, which is a less fertile time. The symptoms she is showing now could be a result of hormonal changes, which is especially true if her period is soon arriving. White discharge is a usual dark and mood swings and temperature changes are possible with hormone fluctuations. See that she drinks enough water, sleeps enough, and applies a heating pad if her uterine pain bothers her.

The tablet containing Dienogest and ethinylestradiol is regularly administered for period pains. Still, it is not acceptable to have continuous bleeding. The bleeding can be a side effect of the medicine or a sign of another problem. Thus, you must inform your gynecologist about this immediately. My girlfriend is pregnant and she takes a abortion pills but she have 3 days improper period can I give her another abortion pill ??
Male | 18
Taking abortion pills incorrectly might endanger your partner. An irregular period afterward doesn't indicate all is well. Don't throw another pill at it - that risks her safety. Instead, get medical advice. A gynecologist can decipher the cause, be it hormonal or incomplete termination. They'll guide the proper care to safeguard her health.

I last had my period on January 4, 2025, but it's now February 21 and I still haven't gotten my next period. This isn't the first time I've experienced irregular periods. In November 2023, my periods stopped for a while before resuming. Throughout 2024, I practiced yoga and drank herbal teas like ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon to help regulate my cycle. Despite these efforts, my periods remained irregular. Now, I'm 19 days late. What could be the reason for this delay, and what should I do?"
Female | 26
It's not uncommon to experience irregular menstrual cycles, especially at your age. Several factors could contribute to this delay, including stress, hormonal imbalances, weight changes, or underlying health issues. Your lifestyle choices, like yoga and herbal teas, may help, but they might not be enough to regulate your cycle completely. I recommend taking a home pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy first. Regardless of the outcome, considering a visit with a gynecologist would be beneficial. They can offer guidance tailored to your situation and help identify any underlying causes for your irregular periods.
