Is Stem Cell Transplant Effective for Sickling Treatment?
Stem cell transplant for sickling
Dr. Pradeep Mahajan
Urologist
Answered on 30th May '24
When red blood cells change shape and get stuck in the body, sickling occurs, which causes pain and infections. It is due to an error in your genetic makeup that you were born with. By providing new cells that create healthy blood, a stem cell transplant may correct this. Eventually, such a therapy could lower the frequency of sickling and improve overall well-being.

It looks like there are certain elements that are below the required levels in your body. For it to function properly, your body needs them. Feeling tired, weak, or unlike yourself can be signs of insufficient amounts of these substances. When some substances are too many, then it may mean that the body is fighting something. To help you feel better soon, you might have to take such supplements like Vitamin B12 or Iron among others.

Hello,
- Assuming you're HIV positive with cancer, and in need of Bone Marrow Transplant: we will first have to check your reports. We will have to see the diagnosis, medical reports, medical history, etc, to see whether a Bone Marrow Transplant would be necessary or not. There are ways to control HIV like increasing the CD34 count. Apart from this there are also other ways but only after that can you be considered a transplant.
- Now, Considering you are seeking cure for HIV through Bone marrow transplant (BMT):
- There have only been two successful cases where HIV was cured with Bone marrow transplant and in both cases the patients had cancer with BMT as a last resort treatment. In case of both cases the patients were suffering from life-threatening advanced stage cancer. The first such case occurred in Berlin, where an American Patient named Timothy Brown had myeloid leukemia and was also HIV positive. He was in the advanced stage of this blood cancer and the doctors had decided to do a Bone marrow transplant and also attempt to clear the HIV simultaneously. Since HIV patients can only get an allogeneic transplant, they had searched for a donor with a rare genetic mutation of the CCR5 gene for both the Berlin patient to make them HIV-resistant. After that the Berlin patient took regular bantiretroviral drugs that suppress HIV and has been virus-free ever since.
- The second successful case was in London, where the patient with Hodgkin's lymphoma and HIV virus was also in the advanced stage of cancer as the doctors decided attempted a stem cell transplant for their cancer and simultaneously attempt to clear HIV. And similarly they searched a stem cell donor with a rare genetic mutation of the CCR5 gene for the patient to make them HIV-resistant. The London patient stopped taking the medication 18 months ago and there is no sign of a return of HIV.
- They are not likely to do BMT just to cure HIV. But if you are a cancer patient you should consult a hemato-oncologist for added information. Our page could help you find experts, refer it - Medical Hematology - Oncologists in Mumbai. Let us know if your city is different, I hope our answer helps

Wiskott Aldric syndrome (WAS) is a very rare X-linked recessive disease characterized by eczema, thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), immune deficiency, and bloody diarrhea (due to thrombocytopenia). It needs a multidisciplinary approach. Treatment too has to cover different aspects of the syndrome. Transplantation is the current accepted treatment HLA typing of all potential donors should be done. If a family donor is not identified, an unrelated donor should be searched so that potential donor is available. But over all benefits of the therapy has to be taken into account. Usually, bone marrow transplantation cost ranges from Rs. 15,00,000 ($20,929) to Rs. 40,00,000 ($55,816). The cost may vary depending on the experience of the doctor and also from one hospital to another. Consult a hematologist, our page could help you with that - Hematologists in Mumbai.
