Can I understand my EEG results before neurology appointment?

Patient's Query

I had an EEG done a couple weeks ago and my neurology appointment is a month away. I'm trying to make heads and tails with what I've been told

Answered by Dr. Gurneet Sawhney

If there were any abnormal brain waves, your doctor may want to investigate further. Things like seizures or even bad headaches can cause strange brain wave patterns to show up on this test. So, it’s good news that you have an appointment with a neurologist coming up soon. They will be able to help you figure out what comes next based on what’s been going on with you and what showed up in the EEG.

I am 48 years old and suffering from carpal tunnel from past 6 years. Earlier problem was not so much but now I am feeling numbness in my right hand while writing or doing any particular work. Should I go for surgery? Is there any physiotherapy after surgery and after how long I can do writing work as I am a teacher

Female | 48

You should go for surgery if your symptoms are very severe and make it difficult for you to do your everyday activities. Yes, after surgery, physiotherapy is done for better flexibility and strength. When can you resume writing and other work depends on the type of surgery you had and other things. It is important to listen to your doctor and start writing only after consulting him.

It seems you're experiencing some mental fatigue or confusion, which is quite common. Factors such as stress, lack of sleep, or even temporary distractions can contribute to this feeling. Symptoms might include difficulty focusing or feeling overwhelmed. To help alleviate this, take regular breaks, practice relaxation techniques, and ensure adequate rest. Engaging in physical activity can also be beneficial. If these challenges persist or significantly impact your daily activities, it may be wise to consult a neurologist. They can provide tailored advice and support, ensuring you feel your best.

I have pain near my one side temple region

Female | 18

Pain localized to one side of your temple may stem from various factors, including tension, migraines, or sinus issues. Often, accompanying symptoms such as sensitivity to light or sound can indicate a migraine, while pressure around the nose may suggest sinus problems. Staying hydrated, managing stress, and practicing relaxation techniques can help alleviate discomfort. However, it’s essential to keep track of your symptoms and consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They can provide personalized care and recommend the most suitable treatment options to address your concerns effectively.

Severe headache and small bump in the right side of head

Male | 21

It may be a result of a recent head injury or tension headache, among other risks. The bump could be a consequence of the pain. One of the ways that can be helpful is to put a cold pack on top of the bump. Lie down afterward for a short rest. If this still doesn't go away, it is advisable to ask for a healthcare professional's opinion for your own safety.

The stroker or synchronized swimming effect of water can occur after a stroke due to weakness in the throat muscles. Ask the doctor if they can refer you to a speech therapist to help improve swallowing. They may also suggest safe methods for eating and drinking.
